Today I decided it was time to retrieve my pumpkin seed from Mr.
Pumpkin. After gathering my tools for the "big event" - a large kitchen
knife & big bucket & set off to do the deed. You must realize I have
never gathered seed from an AG pumpkin before & wasn't quite sure what
to expect. I started cutting around the stem area with my knife. After
about 5 mins. I realized that my Large kitchen knife just wasn't going
to hack the program, so I found my hubby's hand saw (the old fashion
kind) & proceeded to saw off the stem end. It worked rather well. I
pulled off the loosened pumpkin area - geeze it was really thick walled!
Then I looked inside all anxious to gather the hundreds of seeds that I
was sure awaited me! Where did they go???? Where was all the goo?? I had
a good laugh & shared the experience with my hubby. I was able to get
about 150 to 200 seeds from Mr. Pumpkin. They're drying nicely on my
mesh sweather drying rack I got from Walmart. I was amazed that this
pumpkin had so much "space" in him, & yet he weighed so much. I'd love
to exchange seed. Mr. Pumpkin weighed in at 581 lbs. & was still growing
when I had to cut him from the vine to take him to the fair. I got his
seed from P&P seed (Atlantic Giant 800 lb + parent). He (okay, next year
I'll raise goils!) was a joy to raise.
