Shellie,
I have tried vaseline but I think the hairspray works better, I give it
a couple of coats after each one dries. I believe they both work
basically the same way, by sealing the cut edges from the air. However
this doesent take care of the air getting to the inside.
I have covered the pumpkin with a blanket when not being displayed but
then you have to be watchful of mold. I usually get about four to seven
days out of them once carved, depending on weather. Hot no good, cool
better.
I have never tried lemon juice or vinegar and water.
Dry Ice:
Break it into small pieces about the size of a baseball, Keep the water
warm to hot. You must use an electric burner. If you use anything like a
camp stove the smoke from the Dry Ice will displace the air in the
pumpkin and put the flame out.
