Sue Z Q,
The first pumpkin boat race was great fun!!!! It was held in Central Park
in New York, City on a small lake. At the last minute, we were told that
outboard motors could not be use (gasoline) and could we paddle them? I just
laughed and we compromised with electric trolling motors. NBC, CBS, FOX and
CNN covered the event and it did air at various times on all. I heard, but
don't know for sure, that it will air again on Thursday night on Dateline.
Stew Leonard was an excellent pumpkin sailer, the New York City Parks
Commissioner needs a bit of practice. He started the race out in reverse and
was going around backwards in circles.....I was laughing so much I almost wet
my wetsuit. Stew and I finished the course and waited for the commissioner so
we could have a photo finish. A fourth pumpkin pilot actually sank in Tom
Accardo's pumpkin. It was a low key affair competitionwise.
