Re: breeding rules

Dear John:
Yes, I believe so. Crossing a Show King squash with an Atlantic Giant
pumpkin should produce hybrid vigor. How much vigor though is unknown to
me. I do not know the breeding history of the Show King squash. It is my
guess it has a similar back ground to AG. Like AG, Show King is probably
the result of a cross between Goderich Giant, Genuine Mammoth and Mammoth
Tours that took off in a different direction than AG. However, if I wanted
to grow a really big squash that took advantage of hybrid vigor to its
extreme, I'd cross an Atlantic Giant with Zebra or Hungarian Mammoth. That
is of course if you have lots of room to play these kind of games. It's
not called C. "maxima" for nothin.
I believe I read a posting where Chris Andersen, as in "Champion Chris,"
grew a crossed AG and Show King squash. Maybe he'll see this post and
comment on his results and if he believes he saw any unusual vigor in the
plant.
Those seeds could be well worth trying next season.
