Pumpkins in Near-Desert areas

Hi All,

This is my first post, so here's a few questions:

1) Do Giant Atlantic Pumpkins grow in near-desert areas? Where I live we
only get rain between October and May.
It only starts getting cool around late November. Are there suggested
pumpkin types for these kind of regions?

2) Are the GA pumpkins good for pumpkin pie or are they just good for size?
I'm not looking to grow pumpkins of biblical proportions (even if I am
writing from the land of the bible), I'm just looking for a good balance
between size and taste.

3) I am growing a few vines from seeds I pulled from a pumpkin in the
spring. Some of the vines have little splits in them. Am I losing moisture
from these splits? Should I wrap the vines or bury 'em?

4) One of my pumpkins has reached the size of a soccer ball. I have it
sitting on a ceramic tile. Should any special treatment be done to this
fruit? The outside is a pale green. How do I know when it's ready to pick?

Many Thanks,

Josh
