WA update: off to Canby

Well the P-patch is looking mighty barren after loading Lumpy and Casper
into my truck yesterday for the run down to Canby. Very few people
spend time in thier garden plots this time of year, but I was able to
enlist the assistance of the Green River Community College soccer team
that had just finished thier practice at the adjoining soccer fields.
The lone pumpkin in the patch now Mr. Peanut, on the 916 LaRue 97 will
be going to the weigh-off at the super mall in Auburn, WA in a couple
weeks. It's managed to gain another inch in two dimension over the past
week so even though the weather has cooled and turned damp again and
daylight hours have shortened considerably it has sustained some slow
grow. More than the others over the past six days anyway. Lumpy from
the 916 LaRue measured out at 123" circumference and 269" OTT est. wt.
404 lbs. great color, smooth skin, lousy shape but hey, you can't have
everything, it's kind of a low lumpy blob. Whatever the critter that
decided to move into the ground beneath it is, it hasn't done any damage
to the pumpkin. Casper from the 469 Hester 97 is a squash, I took
Pumpy from the same plant to Remlinger farms and the judges declared it
a squash, I should have known but I must have been in denial, they are
both a mostly creamy orange color but I just never noticed how
grey/green they were on the ends. Maybe because most of the time when I
had been looking at them they were under the shade of blue poly tarps.
Anyway Casper measured out at 98" circ. and 236" OTT est. wt. 282 lbs.
although I wouldn't be suprised if it weighs heavy as it is a tall and
broad shouldered fruit and it felt really heavy as we were loading it
up. My little Nissan is riding low on its springs now, maybe I'll leave
them back there to give me more traction this winter.
I'm looking forward to seeing the Northwest growers again in Canby this
weekend and meeting those from this list who did not make it to
Carnation. I'll be going with my daughter and expect it will be a lot
of fun. She's really excited to be going on an out of state trip with
her dad. From what I was hearing at Carnation this region should be
well represented at Half Moon Bay on Monday. I won't be making that
trip though, maybe one of these years I'll be able to grow enough large
ones to put that one on my schedule too. It sounds like a really good
event from all I've heard. Good luck to everyone in the remaining
weigh-offs, I'll post again when I have the weights of my pumpkin and
squash.
