Ron Wallace and others

Ron Wallace,

Hi Ron disappointed not to see you at Topsfield. Asked Warren Cole where you
were and he said you had to work. His pumpkin truly was a sight and such a
dark shade of orange. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the R I
weigh off because the New Milford weigh off is on the same day and I will be
attending that one. I wanted you to see how your seeds did for me. The 680+
grew three pumpkins. Two were absolutely beautifully shaped, and I'm
convinced that if I had brought the largest one to Topsfield it would have
been a dead heat for best looking against the pumpkin that won. The largest
one as of 10-2-98 measured 273 inches still on the vine and unweighed. The
second one was picked on 9-25-98 was still growing and taped 272.5 inches. I
brought it to the Lenox, MA. weigh off. It was about 20 pounds over tape at
468 lbs. The blossom ends are pushed in on these pumpkins and are a nice
shade of orange. Your 800+ plant has two on it. The largest one taping 283.5
inches looks like a classic baked potato the other one on this plant, is
taping 273.5 inches and has a good dill ring showing. Both are still on the
plant and unweighed. Will let you know weighs and try to send you pictures.

Thanks again for all your help this year and your generosity to ship me seeds
a second time after the first ones rotted.

Ron, I was very proud to place 21st. at Topsfield with a 607.2 lbs ( this
pumpkin is the one I refer to as the 614). It was picked for the Week seed
weigh off back on 9-18-98, some 16 days before Topsfield and it was weighed on
a digital scale at 614 lbs. I was quite happy it only lost 6.8 lbs before
Topsfield. If it had still weighed 614 , I would have placed 20th at
Topsfield. (Still in the money, even if it would have only been $50.00.
However, I did placed 8th in the Weeks Seed weigh off and I just received a
check for $200.00. So, it did pay for me to pick early. This pumpkin was
from the Kuhn 607 which was on the same plant with his 929.4 last year.

Looking forward to seeing you again some time. I remain a grateful first year
grower who without your help and other growers like yourself would still be
growing 100 lbs pumpkins.

Alan R. Durham, CT.

P.S. Hugh Wiberg, Paul Handy, Jim Kuhn, Al Jones, Chris Andersan, a personal
thanks to all of you that contributed to my success.
