Hello In Hawaii.
In the sport of Giant Pumpkin growing it is strictly a weight thing. For
that reason we produce some of the ugliest fruit on the planet.
Occasionaly a BIG BEAUTY comes along but they are few and far between.
The reason that the pumpkins are grown on there side is that if the stem
were to be positioned on top of the plant when it is young, as the plant
grows it would lift the stem about three feet in the air and pull the
vine so tight that it would snap.
A good bet for a large AND good looking pumpkin would be a "Burpee
Prizewinner" variety. I grew one plant this year of that variety and
had 17 pumpkins off of it ranging from 50 to over 200 pounds. They are
great looking Pumpkins. Deep Shiny Orange, and with the shape of the
traditional Jack O Lantern.
If you are interested in seeds from it E-Mail me your address and I will
get some out to you.
