Patty:
It is time to put your garden to bed. I would suggest the following. First
clean everything left of your pumpkin plants out of the garden. I would use
them in the compost pile. If you have any compost now is the time to spread it
on your garden. First though I would suggest getting a soil sample and, in
your case, sending it off to Penn State for analysis. When you get it back
follow their instructions regarding the addition of nutrients. You will need
to add some organic material to your patch. I have seen it and you are
definately in need. Also when your soil test results get back, I am sure you
will need some lime. This is the time of the year to put that in. I would
rototill all of the stuff in that you add. You can till it again next spring.
I tilled in some composted cow manure today. The sun was shining and the patch
was dry.
