Well it is always a good idea to remove all traces of the pumpkin plants as
SOON as possible after harvest. This can prevent overwintering pests and
diseases that can spring up next year. After removing all the pumpkin debris,
you might want to consider planting a quick winter cover crop to till in
before the ground freezes, which will really help out the soil condition for
next year by incresing organic matter and fixing back in some nitrogen and
other nutrients that the pumpkins sucked up during the growing season.
