Brock- I wish I had your patch space - I only have room for one plant! so I try to germinate 4 seeds - put two plants in the garden and at some time cut back to 1. So I have to really pick seeds wisely. I can't take the chance to experiment with an unproven seed- especially one under 700#. I think we agree. If I had a great proven seed, I would go with it, as stated somewhere in the original post. Today -I would take a 620 Black, over a 1092 seed, for next year because the 1092 are unproven. That is the proper statistical choice given those two seeds. why ? it has a proven potential. The next given the same two seeds year I might not make the same choice. I guess I have had one to many statistics class. I and was speaking generally in the last post. To restate I would take a unproven seed from a big unknown unproven pumpkin over the unproven seeds from a small unknown pumpkin. Statically that is the better choice. Gordon >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Hey Gordan, This is an age old topic in which the answers aren't really clear if there is a rhyme or reason.................generally by human nature we will tend to plant from the big ones...................which is a good bet?..I think..and is it because of this tendancy that some of the smaller seed goes untested...(we may never know)....usually seed under 700 is from growers that went back to the smaller seed that has been proven to do some good stuff............then that year the trend might be to plant the 697..........559......620..........now your dealing with another added attraction "proven".........now the 620 Black has popped some good ones the best 1018 uow...and 974.......plus others now your asking me which would I rather plant from the 620 or the 1092.............and I can honestly say I don't know!!.......but would lean toward the 620..........as my experience chasing big ones is mixed at best,,,,,,,,,in fact the planting of the proven is mixed at best...( so basically i am a know nothing guy scraficing summer vacation to become a somebody).......so what I do is plant 50/50 from 7under"proven" and over......trying the cutting edge...............The interpretation of the Data Mike N and crew are working on is tricky.........and wasn't included when he printed the numbers.( that was more for curriosity)..but is the most relevant is what seed and what parents seem to be passing the "killer' genes which parents are producing time and time again..........so for this reason alone the record keeping is priceless..........brock
