I think we are doing this genetics thing all wrong.
1- female plant gets pollinated by an male flower from another plant.
2- the genetics of the female pumpkin is clear that it came from last years
pumpkin, for which we know how big it was and whether it weighed heavy or
light compared to the chart.
3- for some reason we give the seed a male father which is really its
grandfather. Does this sound correct to you?
4- the real father's characteristics are those of the pumpkins grown on the
father plant this year.
Should we not be reporting the true characteristics of the father plant
i.e. weight, heaviness etc. in the quest for better seed stock.
seed- from pumpkin parents (who have yielded certain characteristics)-from
pumpkin grandparents (who have yielded certain characteristics)- should be
the way it's done?
Shouldn't it be?
