Wayne,
With 12,500 sq ft. to grow in I think the question becomes how much of your
life do you wish to spend living in your patch next summer. In all
seriousness how many plants do you feel you have time to properly maintain.
A 1,000 sq ft. per plant as George suggested, wth proper pruning techniques
is all you really need to grow a monster and I have seen pumpkins in the 700
to 800 lb range grown in much less space than this! One strategy you might
want to consider is planting at a rate of 1,000 sq ft. per plant then cull
down to your best performing plants or whatever number you feel you are
comfortable with and have time to maintain. Quality vs. Quantity! Once the
plants start to run the pinching, pruning vine burying etc., can get pretty
crazy. Remember it is important to leave room for good air circulation in
your growing area which will help some in reducing mildew & fungus problems.
