Well, CNN has been airing this piece, and it has been fed to hundreds of
local TV stations, including ours.
The blame is to be put on the MEDIA, period. It is THIER responsibility to
CHECK THE FACTS for accuracy before reporting it as fact. They have not been
doing this at ALL lately about ANYTHING, in attempts (I am guessing), to just
basically be the first one to run the story. Accuracy comes second in
priority, if at ALL.
I think the media realizes that they can get away with it, the your average
viewer is naive and will believe anything. I notice TONS of errors and
misleading information every day on all of the news channels on TV. Whatever
happened to journalistic responsibility? Sure, it helps if someone publicizes
the info and give it to the media, but look, it is the MEDIA's and ONLY the
MEDIA's SOLE responsibility to check the facts for themselves. The fact that
they don't know about this list or our various web pages is THIER FAULT.
Heck, a 6 year old can go to YAHOO and type in "GIANT PUMPKINS" and get a
list of websites including this list's archives! DANG, they should be ashamed
to call themselves journalists. They don't even bother to check accuracy
anymore. It is just so sad. I laughed my head off when I saw the story about
the pumpkin claiming it was the World's Largest. The SICK thing is they are
so stupid, they can;t even remember a mere 12 months ago when they said a
1092 was the world's largest. DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the
anchors just sit there with smiles on their faces, with not even a hint of
anything that sounds a bit wrong with the story like "....HEY! Wait a minute!
Didn't we report on a 1000+ pounder last year, and wait....even the year
before! Whoah!". Nope, they just site there and read whatever the prompter
says. SHEESH! I am telling you, this really is scary. I mean if they can't
get something like this right (and they are WAY off), what other news stories
have been falsly reported? Sheesh....very very scary. In the past they USED
to acknowledge that they might not have all the info, (like saying it is the
heaviest pumpkin REPORTED according to THIER sources at the time)but no, they
just flat out say WORLD RECORD! Period! How moronic.
