How very true this is!
I only entered my 245 pounder in the Clarence weighoff because my kids
asked me to- I knew that it was a "waste of time", but it turned out
NOT to be... I didn't win anything big, just got a nice participation
ribbon, but the invaluable thing is that my kids will remember this
weighoff FOREVER.
When we were driving there, I realized that I'd misjudged the time
to get there. Rules said we had to be there by 10 to enter. At 9:50,
I told the kids that we still had 1/2 hour to go, and that we'd
miss entering. Their primary worry? That *other people* would
not get to see and enjoy OUR giant pumpkin. They didn't care
about winning anything, they didn't care about entry in the contest,
they just wanted to show off B.O.B. (the Big Orange Ball).
They started cooking up all sorts of ideas that would allow
others to just SEE the pumpkin we brought even though we wouldn't be
entered... "maybe we could open up the back of the van", "maybe we
could set it out next to the van on the ground".
It turns out the weighing hadn't yet started, and they let us enter after
all. And to top it off, it was NOT the smallest one there! :-)
I left BOB in the van and brought it to work on Monday, and you
should've seen the looks on my friends' faces! It was the same
look "we" had when we saw the Checkon picture!
