Giant Squash Whine
Ok-its my turn to whine....This year I grew three squash plants and two
pumpkin plants with one of the pumpkins going squash...I brought four fruit
to the competition with my wife claiming my biggest squash. I had a big round
BLUE squash,a tall round Green squash,a yellow/cream squash with blue and
purple over 40% of the fruit and the most orange and shiney pumpkin at the
site.The onlookers loved the squash! They loved the colors and the
shapes...fielded many questions and kind comments on them.Noone around here
has ever seen a giant squash much less a BLUE one!.One of the squashes was
the second heaviest fruit at the site.So why the second class citizen stuff
for squash? If it isn't a beaty contest then why base it all on looks?Its the
same species....you all want "thick squash walls"...they look neater at night
all lit up like jackolanterns than pumpkins(or at least as good).
There was no money at this site for squash but they could be entered into the
GPC contest from here...they were rushed in and rushed out as a formality and
a chore by the site...rushed so the judges could leave...Whats up with
that?...Correct me if I'm wrong ,but I think a site with 9 entries would be
looking to increase the participation/interests by encouraging pumpkin
growers to bring a few giant squash along with thier giant pumpkin
entries.....I knew there wasn't anything in it for me but a chance to show
off and have some fun,maybe educate some people, but I didn't expect this and
left a little less than happy.Maybe I'm nieve(sp?),but I'll think long and
hard before I bring my squash again....and I'll continue to grow
them!.........G
