Your explanation seems logical, but history has shown
otherwise. 
Pumpkins with concave bottoms tend to be lighter
than a same sized pumpkin with a flat bottom.
The answer to the question is that concave bottoms
have a thinner wall thickness than flat bottom
do.

A concave bottom has more surface area than a flat
bottom. So the pumpkin 
with the concave sole should weigh more.
Do you really want a flat bottom?
(Nothing personal about your bottom, of course!)
