I found some two tone ones like that last year in the 348 Greene.
Most seeds there were tan, but a small percentage were as you described.
Earlier this year, Harold E. reported here that the tan coloring in AG
seeds is due to an extra layer of packed vertical fibers, so I would think that
only half the seed is covered in this layer on your two-tone ones.
See http://www.disknet.com/indiana_biolab/pk709.htm for his info.
I never distributed any of these two tone seeds, as after drying they
just didn't look as good as the tan ones (they were flatter in
the white part), and I was afraid they wouldn't germinate. I never
actually tested this, though.
