Roundup is not a soil sterilant any you put on the ground is wasted.  A
mild solution of it on the green growing part of the plants is all you
need.  Roundup is not systemic in movement and is not absorbed by roots or 
woody stems.  Read the label!  I'm sure if you poured straight Roundup on
stems and roots it would kill them but this is not a perennial brush
plant/tree.  It is an annual, do it right and save your money.  Roger
