RE: carving as per Langevin's book

I've done some sculpting of my big ones the past few years and the tool that
has worked out well for me is my trusty melon baller. It has a good edge
for scraping away at the meat of the pumpkins. Its pretty messy though.
This year I bought some ceramics tools that potters use for shaping clay, I
think they will work well for me. I imagine a dremel would be useful as
well. This Saturday at the Des Moines weighoff site there will be a
competition for proffesional pumpkin sculptors on the winning giants at that
weighoff. I'm planning to go and watch them work to pick up some tips and
techniques and get a little inspiration. Halloween fortunately falls on a
Sunday this year so I'll have Friday evening and all day Saturday to do my
carving. Mine don't look quite as nice as the proffesionals do, or have the
detail. But the trick or treaters are no less impressed by mine than I am
by the pros. Give it a try, you may find you have a real talent for it.
