I have been using Clay carving tools. The kind you pull. You will have to buy a
few different shapes to find the one your most comfortable with. Then you will
use the others for different types of detail.
If the pumpkin has a hard skin or it is real hard to carve, you should start
with wood chisels commonly called a " gouge ". They are "U" shaped.
