Letterman (devil's advocate view)

In this land of supply and demand, we have to consider the economic reality
of Letterman's show: That which draws and keeps more viewers is rewarded
with more time. Meryl Streep is going to attract more viewers than is a
pumpkin (however giant). She brought millions of people to the TV last
night, the pumpkin a few hundred (us). And, as a bonus, she talked.

Be honest, growing giant pumpkins has not yet reached mainstream America.
We have to promote it more if we want shows like Letterman's to cut us any
slack. Unfortunately, many growers seem to dislike the type of promotion
needed to bring the unwashed masses into our world.

Now, was I disappointed by the show? Yes. I wanted to see the faces of the
folks who grew Moonie. Let them get their due. Should the pumpkin have
received more than 20 seconds of fame? Probably not at the phenomenal cost
of producing a national television show. At least the pumpkin got on. I
remember many times waiting for Carson to introduce someone on the Tonight
show when they just ran out of time. Whoever was supposed to be on had to
be rescheduled.

That's show biz!
