This morning at 1:36 a.m. my wife Paula
and I were nearly bounced out of our bed
by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake. As our bed
was dancing around the room in the dark for
18 seconds we could hear glass crashing and
breaking around us in our bedroom and
throughout the house.
When the shaking finally stopped (it was 18
seconds but it seemed more like a minute
at the time) we got up to assess the dammage.
Most of the pictures in every room in our house
were shaken off the walls. Most of the cabinet
doors were open in the kitchen with stuff spilling
out. We had minor amounts of broken glass
in most rooms in the house.......from lamps,
dishes, bottles, etc.
Fortunately no one was injured.
The biggest mess was in my hobby room.
Video tapes were scattered everywhere.
A jar with about $200 of quarters in it
(my Reno/Tahoe hoard) toppled from a top
shelf .....the floor is this room is a mess of
broken glass, video cassettes, quarters and
boxes all jumbled together. One of my video
cameras took a bounce from the table to
the floor .......I will test it for dammage later
today.
And now about the patch..........the quake
shook the styrofoam supports from the
raised vine on the largest pumpkin in my
patch (on my 991 plant.....aprox 450 lbs.)
When the supports shook out, the stress
of the unsupported vine along with the shaking
of the earth, has caused a small crack where
the main vine attaches to the stem of the
pumpkin. I did new supports on the vine
this morning. I think will do some sulfur paste
and duct tape the vine/stem joint where this
crack is.
Paula just told me she found cracked
sheetrock in the kitchen and living room.
Looks like its time for me to get busy
patchin' things up.
The epicenter was about 6 miles from the
city of Napa. We have 10 AG growers in
Napa.......I haven't heard yet how the rest
are doing.
