Re: Presumptous

MB,
Very good points. As we sit now many growers try to
get a lot of new seeds each year. We all know why
too. Who knows what seed will produce the next big
one. If you get it this year for "free" then you
won't have to trade an arm and a leg for it or pay
$50-$100 for it the next year at an auction. And like
you have said in the past- I would be that there are
lots of great seeds that get passed over and are never
planted. But such is the game. why plant a unproven
seed with great genetics when you can plant a proven
seed with great gentics?
I don't know... maybe we should switch to a "pay to
play" system. Then the people who are really serious
about growing a big one can pay to get the best seeds.

I mean people are willing to pay then why not charge ?
if you charge to much then people won't buy right ?
it is supply and demand at work right, free enterprize
and all that.
but one of the good things about growing pumpkins is
that a dedicated new grower can grow a monster.
Chris, our fine 16 year old young man, is a good
example. Why should he or the rest of us have to pay
to get a decent seed ? Why shouldn't he get some money
to improve his patch ?
and who would want to get a couple hundred seed
request emails in a couple of days ? well I would -
not because i want to answer them all but because it
meant that i grew something big. but others who are
busy with school/work, family, etc... might not be to
excited to get swamped with requests.
on the other hand... why not just give your seed away.
I mean all the seed I have... someone gave them to me.

It's all for fun. for the joy of growing. sharing
seeds with the grower down the street or on the other
side of the world. why bring money into it. it's just
fun.
I don't have an answer... just rambling out loud here.
but your right most all of us have more seeds than we
will ever plant- but i don't see a easy solution.
maybe we don't have to come up with a solution - but
just let it play out... how ever it turns out is how
ever it turns out. And just be who and how you want
to be and let others do that same... knowing that
we'll step on each others toes every now and then
along the way. Every one knows I've stepped on a few
toes - more than most ! Diana forgive me for
exploding/imploding at you... I suggest you marry
Greg and live happily ever after - enigamtically
growing pumpkins together of course!

As much as I agree with the spirit of giving and like
to uphold that
standard. I think that it is presumptous to think
that all growers follow
my ethics. I believe that we over step our boundaries
when we dictate what
one should do with their pumpkin and with their
seeds. This seems purely
his or her decision. I can accept his or her request
or reject it upon my
beliefs.

The game has changed as it has grown so much. Via
the internet Growers
with hot seed are getting 200-700 seed requests. And
at times have heard
how overwhelming it can be. I choose to put a little
gift in my request
for refreshments for all their secretaries and
envelope stuffers.

Heres a new topic for the ethics commitee. The
generosity of growers has
created another monster seed mongers........or request
abusers......who
send out multiple seed request and collect more seed
than they can ever
plant in 4 lifetimes.

few more cents to add to the
pot...................MBrock
