Advice Needed

Hello & thanks in advance for any advise you could give me. 
 
Maybe everything has been going too smoothly this summer.  This past week something has been digging around the patch. (only by the stump)  It digs all the dirt about 3" or 4" deep & is exposing the roots around the stump.  So far it hasn't done any damage.  I even tried putting plastic sticks into the ground around the area, but this creature still keeps digging.
 
Any ideas?
