Have no idea what it could be but have an idea how to stop it. Try
some small mesh chicken wire over the entire stump area or buy some hot
pepper wax or similar deterrent from your local garden store. Maybe try
some cayenne pepper, garlic or anything along those lines. I have
a local ally can that comes in my patch and uses it for a littler box.
I see where it has dug around and covered up but hasn't caused any damage
so I don't bother with it.
