I'm heading for the Common Ground Fair in Maine tomorrow. I looked on their
website to see if there is a pumpkin weigh off. I found the following:
"Great Pumpkin (by weight). Open to all ages. This category is for
entries from the Cucurbita pepo species; this species
includes
acorn squash, summer squash, and the small gourds, as well as
pumpkins. The stems are hard, with five sharply angled sides.
Connecticut Field is an example of a very large variety.
Biggest Squash (by weight). Cucurbita maxima; besides the
giant pumpkin-like squash Atlantic Giant, this species
includes
Buttercup, Banana, Hubbard, and Turban squash. The stem is
round and corky. "
Now I'm trying to figure all this giant pumpkin stuff out. From the initial
research I've done into this sport, I was under the impression that it was
acceptable as a pumpkin if it was big and orange. In other fair books it seems
like the category pumpkin includes the Atlantic Giant "squash." Are there other
weigh off's that make the distinction that Common Ground does?
Thanks in advance.
Marie
P.S.
Thanks to the person from New York from whom I just received a very interesting
assortment of seed!
