RE: Glenn's baby is done

It seems to me this all started with the subject line "Glenn's baby is
done". Personally, I would like to have the seeds from a 900+ lb squash.
The AGGC site is all about genetics. The seeds from a 200 lb pumpkin can
have just as good (if not better) genetics than a 1000 lb fruit. Same
comparison between a 900 lb fruit that held and one that split. Some people
would not choose to grow an UOW fruit that split, for fear it would split on
them, while others would be happy to get a seed with that high genetic
potential. There are too many differing conditions to rule out the genetics
of a fruit just because it didn't make it to weigh-off.

As for a site for recording just weights listing and picturing an UOW over
the world record, I think I would have to agree, is wrong. Especially
considering it is so early in the season. I do think there is a difference
between an UOW that was just weighed early or late vs. one that had a split
or rot. There should be some rules to govern how an early/late fruit is
officially weighed when not at a sanctioned event.

I agree with Bill. If you don't weight it at an official weight off site, it
doesn't exist officially. I think I can attest to the struggles of pumpkin
growing, but, if I don't show up with the goods on wieght off day then I got
nothing but tall tales. The last I checked the AGGC site doesn't maintain
records for the fastest germinated, the quickest vine growth or the fastest
to 300 lb.. So why should it pollute its records with unofficial results.

Hey all: What are your options, (make them private if you wish) regarding
pumpkins that don't make it to weigh off.I personally think its wrong that
on the AGGC site, the fish that got away is ahead of the world record
pumpkin. Anyonecan hook a big trout but if they don't land it, its just
talk. Half of this game is arriving on Oct 6th, putting a fruit on the
scales, getting the results & then bragging. Not talking about the one that
got away. Mind you, I'm not sour grapes, I've lost 5 fruitso far that I
consider only as cull's as they let me down, all running in 500 & 600 lbs
but not worth anything in comparisonto whatever my competitors arrive with
On weigh off day. Just curious as to how other growers feel. I know myself
if I held theworld record (O I wish) I would be really cheesed off at seeing
a UOW as top dog. Just a subject for discussion before weigh off 01Let's
hear what the rest of you are thinking ???????????????This is sparked by the
would be squash mentioned on a major pumpkin web page , ahead of giving the
world record squash (Official)the front page which it should have gotten but
the web master has not seen fit to change it. Bill VanAt 08:41 PM 9/18/01 ,
