Bear ate pumpkin!?

I walked out to my pumpkin patch this morning, to see an awful
site! My biggest pumpkin was covered with scratch and bite marks, and as I got
closer to inspect, I saw it hollowed out on the other side of the pumpkin! It
wasn't a huge pumpkin but it made me happy! It was estimated to be a 298
or so pounds. I never saw the bear eating the pumpkin, but I don't know of any
other animal that could leave scratch and bite marks like that!? So my question
is what well stop the bear from coming back, I don't want to loose all my
pumpkins.!
