Beowoulf the Blue Nose

Put me down on the list for late patch problems.  Beowoulf (846 Calai x 789 Zunino) has developed a serious case of gummy stem rot on his snout.  About two weeks ago the stem started to swell up and split.  This kept getting worse until and the splits started oozing.  I tried capton and the blow dryer daily to keep the stem dry to no avail - gummy rot started and was winning.

So I tried Alan Reynold's stem rot cure, scrapping off all the soft spots, brushing down with a bleach solution and spraying on a stiff mixture of Soap Shield. (copper-based fungicide) After this operation the stem was bleeding so badly that I also cut Beowoulf off the vine so the stem could dry out.

The bad news is I will lose a few pound before the weigh-off.  The good news is I think I stopped the rot!  - Thanks Alan.

The only downside to this treatment is that Beowoulf now has a blue nose.

The mighty Beowoulf shows off his nose job

So Beowoulf has stopped growing and his snout is a sight, but he still wants a piece of the action at a weigh-off.  This weekend I'm having my annual pumpkin party where I bribe all my friends into helping me move my pumpkins with beer and food. (works every time) We'll load Beowoulf on a pallet and he'll be ready to rumble.

Bring on your big one's, Beowoulf is big, mean, heavy and very very orange.

Best of luck to all,

vince
