Different strokes

I guess it just comes down to where your priorities lie and what you hope to get out of the sport. If you are growing for money and for recognition by a governing body such as the GPC or WPC, then you of course need to abide by their rules and weigh on their dates. If instead, you are growing for personal satisfaction and the recognition of your peers, then you probably couldn't care less about organized weighoff events and dates. Growing a 1000 pound pumpkin is an incredible piece of work no matter how you slice it. A wise man once said that 99.999% of the world couldn't give a #$% about giant pumpkins. He is, of course, correct. Even the new 2003 Guinness Book of World Records still has the 1131 Checkon 1999 listed as the world record. In a sport as obscure as ours, only those who actually participate in it really know anything substantial about it. Pumpkins weighed outside of sanctioned events will always be just as valid as the others in the eyes of our peers and the achievement of growing them will never diminish. Additionally, all pumpkins will be represent equally (and accurately) on the AGGC web site for all the see and appreciate and yes, they all 'count'. I think this has become just as valid a listing of pumpkins as any the GPC or WPC could put together. That's just my opinion though and I'm obviously biased. If I was instrumental in developing the WPC or GPC organizations as many have been, I would probably see things differently. Again, it all comes down to where your priorities lie and who your friends are.

Best of luck to everyone,

Mike
