Woodchucks & such
Although I have trapped 8 opossums, 5 woodchucks, 2 raccoons, 1 chipmunk,
and 1 wood rat in my patch this year with live traps, I don't know how many
would have survived if it was legal to discharge firearms within the city
limits of Springfield, MO! I don't know how humane relocating these
critters really is anyway. Many animals just don't survive if they have to
fight others for new territory. In fact, when I released one of the smaller
opossums, it dashed across an open field and I watched as 3 huge crows
landed in a triangle around the thing...I didn't have time to stay to see
what happened next, but their carnivorous intent was clear. Sadly despite
all this trapping something still manages to get most of the ripe cantaloupe
before I do!
