Bonnie,
It comes from a children's book, "Little House on the Prairie" where a
mouse helps grow a giant pumpkin by cutting the vine of the fruit
underneath and inserting a wick and that wick being inserted into a jar
of milk, leading the fruit to drink it and grow monstrous..
However upfront this issue may seem in american culture, it is very
untrue and just a wonderful childrens book...
