7th Annual Prince Edward County Pumpkinfest

From the Pumpkin Patch by Jim Ives

The 7th Annual Prince Edward County Pumpkinfest is just around the corner and there are some pretty nice pumpkins decorating the various pumpkin patches around the County. Saturday, October 18th is the date with a Pancake Breakfast at the Town Hall early in the morning and the famous Pumpkin Parade beginning on Belleville Road at 10:30 am.

My wife, my grandson and myself just returned from a holiday in the Maritimes where we went and visited with the legendary Howard Dill and his son Danny. Howard is the man responsible for developing the Atlantic Giant variety of pumpkins on his farm in Windsor, Nova Scotia. He has patented this variety and sells seeds all over the world. He grows about 40 plants of the Giant variety along with hundreds of plants of other varieties that he sells for Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations. He is a true gentleman and gave us a wonderful tour.

Word has just come down that a 1458 lb. pumpkin was weighed in last week in New Hampshire, if this was a sound pumpkin, it would be a new world record.

Lou Pierson of Wellington is busy making preparations for the games, contests, food booths and craft tables while the Pumpkin Growers and Rotary Club are working on the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off which will be held at Mid Town Meats.

A new prize in memory of Bill Greer has been created and it will be $200.00 cash and a trophy for the largest pumpkin grown in the County. This will match our 1st place prize of $200.00 and a good grower in the County could possibly win both prizes. There will also be a number of growers prizes which will be given out with a draw of the growers names. This means that there is a good chance to win just by entering your pumpkin, large or small.

There will be another Pumpkinfest meeting at the Wellington United Church on Thursday, September 25th at 7:00 pm and we will be looking for volunteers to help run our programmes. So turn out and lend a hand.

See you there and keep em growin Jim Ives Secretary/Treasurer PECPumpkin Growers
