The Rules
The Whittier pumpkin was truly a monster. It was the largest pumpkin ever
grown in the world but had a hole in the blossom end. How unfortunate. How
unlucky. How heartbreaking if you feel the weight is not valid because of the small
hole in an otherwise marvelous pumpkin. It did not hold sound until weighoff
day. However, it cannot be disputed that this pumpkin was the largest ever
grown in the world. The GPC and WPC do have rules and one of them excludes
pumpkins with holes in them. The rest of the world doesn't recognize these rules
including Guiness. So Houghton is the GPC Champion and Whittier grew the largest
pumpkin in the world. GPC rules don't really take away the rights of the rest
of the world? Even the GPC allows an early weighoff date once every 7 years or
so because of the Fair one of the weighoff sites is attached to. Now we have
two world records, the largest pumpkin grown in the world not weighed on
weighoff day with a hole in it and the largest pumpkin grown in the world weighed on
the first Saturday in October without a hole in it. Other categories could be
created such as the largest pumpkin grown in the world without a hole in it
not weighed in the United States or Canada, ie places with different season
timing. None of this is a concern to me. I would like to grow one pumpkin
weighing over 1000 pounds weighed on the first Saturday in October at a recognized
weighoff site without a hole in it. If I grow one that weighs 1500 pounds with a
small hole in it weighed at some other time in some other place, I'll take
it. However, I don't think I will be "blessed" with a problem like this. Would
someone send me the seed Whittier grew his pumpkin from? How do I get ahold of
Brett Hester?
