Re: split
Hi Tim,
I had a stem split on one of my pumpkins this year and
fortunately it healed and did not progress. I caught is after
it just started. I believe in my case that the stem split
started because it had been exposed to the direct sun for about
three days. I had been out of town and the covering I had
turned out to be insufficient to block the sun. I have taken
towels and covered the pumpkin since that time (thanks to a tip
from Kevin Smith in California about putting linen sheets on his
pumpkins) and have not had any further trouble. Have you had a
problem with a stem split that might have been
sun(heat)-related?
I did not have any Captan to put on the crack so I just used a
strong solution of liquid Sevin. I figured it would keep the
bugs away from the crack. It turns out that the extra strong
solution seemed to help dry up the crack. I had noticed that
the Sevin had helped dry up some accidental scratches on one
other pumpkin I had. I do not know if I would have used the
Sevin on a deeper crack but I might try it again some year just
to see if it would have the same drying effect.
