split

David,

A stem split occurs when the pumpkin around the stem grows faster than the
stem, so the stem splits where it meets the pumpkin. This does not mean
that it is through into the cavity even though it looks like it. The flesh
of the pumpkin usually splits to some degree with the stem but may not
compromise the cavity. Just trying to clarify. The stem splits in my
pumpkin are big enough to stick two fingers in but so far there is no hole
all the way in. I hope yours makes it.

Tim
