Scottish Pumpkins
Hi,
I have grown a couple of Giant Pumpkins this year in the Scottish Borders.
A group of people in Coldstream run a competition in the local pub and last
year the winner had a pumpkin of just 110 lbs. I decided I could do better than
that and so obtained some seed of :-
1.Trumm 695 (from Iowa USA)
2. Boynton 620 (from Australia)
Having read the book "How to grow Giant Pumpkins 2" and followed the advice
given I now have 4 pumpkins with weights of 137lbs, 206 lbs, 206 lbs and 210
lbs approx. ie. using the over the top tape measuring system. I know these are
not big by world standards but for Scotland they are, I think, worthy of
comment.
As the winner oflast years Coldstream competition actually grew his pumpkin
in Northumberland it was not a Scottish Pumpkin.
Questions.
a. What is the Scottish record for a Giant Pumpkin?
b. Is there a record at all?
c. How do I verify my weight?
d. Can I claim the (vacant?) Scottish record?
e. Has anyone grown a Giant Pumpkin this far north (circa latitude 55
degrees)?
All this is of course dependant on me being able to keep the plants frost
free for the next 4 weeks.
Also these pumpkins have been grown organically, using horse manure as a
hotbed initially, then bonemeal at first, followed by dried blood, and later
seaweed mix as a foliar feed.
I would appreciate any answers and help on any of the above.
Many Thanks,
Kindest regards to all Giant Pumpkin growers
Alec West.
Incidently, The man who sent me the seed from Iowa also sent me some "Long
Gourd" seed too, and I have managed to produce an 86" long specimen ( I believe
the world record is either 95" or 110 " so this is some plant. all the
questions above could equally apply to the long gourd other than measurement as
opposed to weight.
