Re: Weighing pumpkins

First of all, let me say that I certainly think that we cannot accept
a pumpkin weighed in that manner, because of all the things that
can go wrong. There should be a standard and that should be one
certified scale. I have no problem in making this sort of rule.

But on the other hand, in defense of the person who posted, if this
was done properly, it's as accurate as the scales are. If, there is nothing
but "scale" between the pumpkin and the ground, then add up the
scales and you have the weight. There is no where else for the mass
to go, all of it has to be registered on the scales. To say otherwise would
violate the laws of physics.

More importantly, again, would we be "out of accurate range" on any of the
scales, or is any of the pumpkin's mass supported in some other way?
Like I said, for reasons like this it probably shouldn't be official.

As far as weighing it on firm ground or not, the poster didn't say. If the
system is "static", meaning the ground is not moving at all, then again
the measurement system could be valid. If it's moving, then it is not
accurate. Interestingly, if the ground was compressing, then it would
probably register "light".

OK, OK, I know this is a lot of engineering/physics mumbo jumbo for
most of you, but lets keep things in perspective.

Regards, Cliff

........attaway, Bob!---you tell 'em! The OTT method is still the "best" at
a close estimate, however, as I understand it, a scale certified by the GPC
is the only "official" method of weighing and determining the exact weight
for " the books".....

But, the visual of 4 bathroom scales out in someones' patch is pretty
hilarious. ( just for my own curiosity though, I weighed my first AG of 99
lbs on my bathroom scale, after my brother carried it into the house and we
set the scale on the firm linoleum kitchen floor.......)
