Stem splits are usually due to stress from the vine. If the vine is tight,
try cutting some tap roots near the pumpkin and propping the vine up with
Styrofoam, bricks or wood. When you have some play in the vine, the stress
should be released. Dust the splits with captan or sulfur.

Subject: I did Something stupid
I did something very stupid. I was trimming the vines in my patch and I
accidentally cut the primary vine to my largest pumpkin. Right near the
stump.
How can I make this pumpkin last till Halloween? Am I out of luck? Any
ideas?
Will the roots along the primary vine at least keep it from rotting? I also
have one that has a split stem. I don't think it is going all the way to the
cavity. Any ideas there? I would appreciate any advice. I am really upset
and
am almost ready to convert the patch to corn.
Thank you,

Brian I agree with this post...
As far as the cut on the main vine, I would try to make a new cut on both
halves of the vien where you cut it, then put some rooting compound on the ends
and put them back together. Try putting something like a small pinch clamp on
the vine with two small pieces of thin foan to keep the clamp from digging i
nto the vine n. It may grow back together and if not the roots on the vines
may keep the pumpkin going if this doesn't work.
Good Luck
