Re: 2004 Clarence NY Weigh-Off Sept 25th

 Toby and The List
I sure do see your side of this issue Toby but there is much more to the
problems when we get to the Color issue and who decides. In California I believe
Both Borchard Farms weigh off and Elk Grove pay to the Third spot for Squash. I
know Borchards is $300, $150 and $50. Can't remember what Elk Grove offers
But it is Very Handsome too I believe starting with $500 for Squash. We are a
little Spoiled in California because there is allot of companies just dyeing to
sponsor the weigh offs. look at Elk Grove they offer a Whopping $5 a LB for
first place and then $2,500 for second and down the line. Half Moon Bay there is
$5 a LB ETC ETC. and Borchard farms being private is Very generous with his
Prize money. The MOST important part is you get to KEEP your pumpkin. It is
Prize money they are not Buying your pumpkin and Especially the seeds which will
be sold later !!!! I just can't Fathom winning at a weigh off and having to
leave without my pumpkin and seeds that is just ODD...
The fact is Rules are made by people who have the power to make them, and
yes you are right some great seeds have gone by the wayside because of the
Color and Money issue BUT Remember what is Stated in How to Grow World Class
Giant Pumpkins # 1. "Squash will be the first 1000 LB fruit." or something close
to that. it is true because of the Money issue those seeds have not been used
to make the Monsters once imagined but there are still some growers making
some HOT Pumpkin X Squash crosses and Squash X Squash crosses that should do
great if anyone ever grows them. as it goes for Squash we are about 9 years or so
behind the Pumpkin genetics but we are closing the gap FAST !!!! Keep growing
em BIG !!
Take care all and have a wonderful season !!!
