Notice to Growers
Fellow Growers and those who follow the AG hobby--since the early 1990's I
have compiled and distributed lists of statistics on official Giant Pumpkins
grown in Canada and the USA.
The time has come to turn this important task over to others.
The lists I am referring to are:
1.USA and Canada--top 20 sites for the year, also showing the figures for the
previous 5 years.
2.USA and Canada--top sites by their 6 year average.
3.Canadian---Over 850 lbs---for the year
4.Canadian---top official pumpkins of all time.
Notes:
a--lists 1 and 2 are based on the sites' top 10 average and show that figure
for the most recent 6 years.
b--in all cases only official pumpkins,ie.accepted by the site officials are
included.
Comments:
1.I will help anybody, during the coming fall months as the data becomes
available,to compile the figures.I see 2005 as a "transfer year"
to help others continue with the records.
2.Lists 1 and 2 should be compiled by one person---list 3 and 4 could be
done by a different person.
3.I will send a sample of my 2004 list(s) to anyone(well up to a reasonable
maximum number of people) who wants to look over the data before deciding. My
files are in simple ascii format.
4.The ideal candidate(s) should have a sincere interest in the AG hobby, the
computer skills to process simple files and the determination to pursue the
results from all the top sites to complete a thorough list.Fortunately
now, with the internet and email the data is not difficult to collect.
5.If there are several people interested in this project, that would work
too.The data could be collected by members of a small team and forwarded to
the team leader for compilation.I can supply a list of reliable contact
person(s) for each site.
6.Initially I started these lists because there were fueding AG
organizations making conflicting claims and it was difficult for any
ordinary grower to know the true picture. So I decided to collect my own
information from all top sites and make the list completely
"non-organizational".This is the way the lists should continue.
7.Your reward will be in knowing that you are carrying along important
information about the AG hobby that does not exist anywhere else. Also you
will have great "negotiating power" for recieving complimentary newsletters
from the groups that publish your work.
Please seriously consider this and let me know if you are interested. It all
should be a fairly easily handled via email.
Yours Sincerely--Al Eaton
