- Thread-topic: Side Vines question
Hi,
I also had a small "volleyball" on a side vine that I wanted to save for Halloween. I harvested it a few weeks ago (about 90 pounds) and stored it in the cellar. But now it has gone bad already :( It smells an fell soft. Why? Did I cut it off too soon? Wasn't it ready?
Best regards,
Anders,
Sweden

Hi Chriss, I would cut the vine tips to stop their growth and make sure all tertiary vines are removed. I would also keep your smaller one if you want it, sure it may steal a few pounds from your fair pumpkin, but you said you want to keep it, so keep it.

standing at the end of my main vine on the left hand side I have no leaves
or side vines due to SVB. On the right hand side I have huge side vines
that continue to flower and sprout females. The leaves are large and the
vines very healthy. I also have a volleyball size pumpkin that was
pollinated by bees about 8 days ago. It is on a side vine, near the top of
my main. Are my side vines and my volleyball taking energy away from my
giant? Should I cull the side vines? I would love to keep the volleyball
to have for Halloween. The giant has been entered in our county fair which
is in 17 days. Any help would be appreciated. I hope you are all growing
them BIG!
