cutting back vines

Hey gang.  I was wondering when you start to cut back vines?  I've been cutting some leaves off that are damaged, by disease or insects I don't know.  Now I have only a couple of leaves at the stumps.  I have found one SVB in one of the vines and cut the vine off.  How do i know if it got the pumpkin?
