Steve, I like your thinking. We could handle bets on which pumpkins would
grow the fastest, which would make to the finish line/weigh-off, and what the
final weights would be. If we don't capitalize on this idea now, someone else
will(if we build it, people will come). Steve M.

Worst year for tomatoes in 30 years! A commercial tomato distributor from
Georgia sent hundreds of thousands of blight infected plants across the
country. On top of that, the cool wet weather has been perfect for fungi. I
am trying to get my field pumpkins and squash through week by week. I hope
to pull them through for market!
I had luck this year by doing the following...
1 Plant your tomatoes in the soil.
2 Lay your dripline.
3 Cover the bare ground with black landscape fabric.
4 Cage your plants.
5 Wrap clear plastic around each cage with a flap cover for the top
(ventilation).
This will do two things. The fabric and plastic prevent splash which spreads
fusarium, septaria, etc. It also heats the soil for an early headstart on
growth. The clear plastic "greenhouses" each plant.
I did 60 plants at the fraction of the price of a greenhouse.
When you use a true greenhouse, you deal with temp. and airflow issues. It
can be a chore. Maybe you and I could go in on an "indoor AG growing arena"?
It could be completely climate controlled with irrigation, misters, and
dehumidifiers. We could even build bleachers, beer vending and a scoreboard!
Good Luck!

Damn those fungi!!! My last Ag has a hollow spot inside from what I can
gather by tapping it, probably caused by a fungus(see previous post). Next
year my tomatoes are going into small greenhouses(late blight this year),
and
at least one AG is going to have a semi-controlled environment to prevent
too
much moisture from ruining my "grow 'em big" attitude. Good luck to you and
Morgan. All my best wishes. Steve M.

Yes, although growth has slowed quite a bit. We have had lows @40 degrees
the last few nights. The ground is still saturated from 12 inches of rain
last week. Her vines are succumbing to fungal problems despite applications
of Daconil. Thanks for asking. Will keep you posted.
