Sorry Scott! People never cease to disappoint me!
All I can say about the Borax is from my experience this year. My Brother's
fruit is still on the vine and is going to make to the finish line (short
any pumpkinacide by idiots). The Borax paste has seemed to end stem rot and
heal the wound. The expanding foam sounds like a heck of an idea.

Sorry for the news.
You might want to try some "insulating foam sealant".  Comes in a spray can
with a spray tube.  You can squirt it right into the holes and the foam will
expand to fill the space.  Good luck.
PS. I had to use it on my Dill Award speciman this year too.  It's still up,
