Green pumpkin on sick vine

I have a pumpking that is just starting to turn orange on a very sick vine.
 I would love to pull this vine completely, but as a novice, I don't know
if this would be the thing to do or not.  Will a pumpkin continue to turn
orange after it has been cut from the vine?  The leaves on this vine are
yellow and are turning brittle.. I can't imagine this vine doing much good
for the pumpkin growing on it.  As always, any advice is appreciated..
