Iowa Pumpkins


Hi all!

Does anyone know of towns someplace in Iowa where pumpkin contests are held
and how much the top prizes are worth?  This year I have just started out
with growing pumpkins and I have the "Big Boy" variety.  I have one that
looks to be close to a hundred pounds, but it is growing deep in the trees
where sunlight doesn't have a chance of hitting it, and amazingly it's
doing great!  Not a blemish on it.

Next year I'm planning for the Atlantic Giants and I was wondering when to
start the seeds.  I have heard anywhere from early April to early May.

Another question.  If they make seeds to be grown to 900 pounds and over,
how come the winners of contests are around 600 pounds?  Are the seeds
extremely fragile or do they just not grow well?

Last question.  Why are there names like Vessey and so on?  Is that a
special brand of Atlantic Giants or are they just the names people have
called their pumpkins?
