The Aluminum sulfate is used to dry up a wet area....it does not prevent
disease to my knowledge. If you have a soft spot on a stem, take a toothbrush
and brush away all soft material....it does no good to paint over a soft
spot. Once you have it down to solid material, flush it clean with water and
let it dry. Next coat the stem with captan or probably even better, coat it
with Daconil. Keep it dry. That should do it.
