The Giant Growers Association (GGA) annual weigh-off was held on
Saturday, September 13, 1997 at the North Carolina State Farmers Market
in Raleigh, North Carolina. Prize awards totaling $35,000.00 were
awarded to growers competing in the giant vegetable contest. Awarding
classes were largest pumpkin, largest watermelon, largest tomato,
largest cantaloupe, heaviest bushel gourd, longest dipper gourd and the
largest diameter sunflower head.
Winning first prize of $5000.00 for the largest pumpkin (649 1/2 pounds)
was Joe Miley of Odon, Indiana. First Prize of $5000.00 for the
largest watermelon (203 pounds) was awarded to Donald Murphy of Pink
Hill, North Carolina. First prize of $2000.00 for the largest tomato
(4.40 pounds) was awarded to Minni Zaccaria of Long Branch, New Jersey.
First prize of $2000.00 for the largest cantaloupe (54.64 pounds) was
awarded to Donald Murphy of Pink Hill, North Carolina. First prize of
$500.00 was awarded for the heaviest bushel gourd (161 1/2 pounds) was
awarded to Richard Wright of Robbinsville, New Jersey. First prize of
$500.00 for the longest dipper gourd (65 ¾ inches)was awarded to Richard
Wright of Robbinsville, New Jersey. First price of $400.00 for the
largest diameter sunflower head (19 3/8 inches) was awarded to Gregory
Smith of Albertson, North Carolina.
Harry Hurley of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina entered a long bean
measuring 51 3/8 inches. The entry will qualify as a candidate for a
new Guinness World Record. Current world record for the longest bean is
48 ¾ inches. Andrea Benton of Pink Hill North Carolina set a new State
record for a pumpkin at 599 ½ lbs.
Charlie Edwards, manager of the North Carolina State Farmers Market,
estimates that seven thousand people attended. Entries were received
from eleven states with the farest entry from Colorado. Through out the
year one million visitors come to the Raleigh farmers market to buy
vegetables and fruit.
North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Graham said that the contest
was good and would encourage more interest in fruits and vegetables.
The Giant Growers Association is open to growers and non-growers alike.
